Doing business in Calgary

Calgary had about 1.3 million residents at the 2021 census, and Statistics Canada records about 58,000 business locations with employees in the city. Energy head offices fill the downtown core, consultancies and young technology firms have spread into the Beltline, service companies and fabricators work out of Foothills Industrial, and larger operators run office campuses in Quarry Park.

Companies incorporate through the Alberta Corporate Registry, turn to the Calgary Chamber of Commerce or Business Link for advice and deal with a single sales tax, because Alberta has no PST or HST. The harder work is operational: field jobs that need costing, equipment that needs servicing and stock spread across yards. Skyline Nexus ERP brings those threads into one ledger.

Modules Calgary businesses start with

Oil and gas head offices and energy services

Behind the head offices downtown sits a long chain of energy service companies: well-site contractors, equipment rental firms, inspection specialists and fabrication shops in Foothills Industrial. Their revenue arrives as field tickets against client contracts, their equipment works hard in remote conditions, and their safety records are checked by every client that audits them before awarding the next job.

Skyline Nexus ERP costs each contract as a project with tasks, milestones and a budget, and tags revenue and expenses with the project and a cost centre. Asset Management depreciates equipment straight line, by declining balance or by units of production, the CMMS module schedules planned maintenance and issues work permits, and the EHS module records incidents, hazards, risk assessments and corrective actions.

Transportation, warehousing and distribution

Rail connections, an inland port and the cargo operations at Calgary International Airport have made the city a distribution base for much of Western Canada. Third-party logistics providers and wholesalers here handle broad product ranges across several sites, and their customers expect accurate availability before they place an order, not an apology after the truck has left.

In Skyline Nexus ERP each warehouse is a business location with its own stock, and transfers between sites move through pending, in-transit and completed statuses. The Stock Aging and Dead Stock reports show what is tying up space, Physical Stock Verification supports regular counts, and the CRM follows each shipper or buyer from the first enquiry to an accepted proposal.

Agribusiness and food processing

The farms of southern Alberta supply a processing industry that turns grain, cattle and oilseeds into food and feed, and many of the firms that trade, process or distribute that output are based in Calgary. Their year follows harvest and calving, their inputs arrive in bulk by weight, and their finished goods carry lot numbers and best-before dates that customers check.

The MES module in Skyline Nexus ERP holds bills of materials, routings, work centres and production work orders, so a recipe becomes a costed production run. Weight-scale integration lets goods sold by weight be rung up directly, lot and expiry reports follow each batch, and FIFO costing charges the oldest purchases to cost first, matching how food is rotated on the shelf.

Compliance

What applies in Canada

Canada has no e-invoicing mandate and no federal QR or fiscal-device rule. A valid invoice is defined by what the buyer needs to claim input tax credits, in three tiers: under $100, $100-$499.99 and $500 or more. From $100 the invoice needs the GST/HST number and the tax; from $500 it also needs the buyer's name, payment terms and descriptions. Rates are GST 5%, HST 13% (ON), 14% (NS) or 15% (NB, NL, PE), and GST plus QST 9.975% in Quebec, PST 7% in BC, 6% in SK or RST 7% in MB. In Quebec, invoices must be in French. Restaurants, bars and taxis there must issue bills from a Revenu Quebec-certified sales recording system with a QR code, which Nexus is not. Keep records for 6 years; the CRA expects records in Canada unless it gives permission.

  • No e-invoicing mandate (B2B, B2C); PDF invoices are fine

  • Under $100: supplier name, date, total

  • $100-$499.99: add the GST/HST number, the tax (or an 'includes GST/HST' note) and the tax status of each line

  • $500+: add the buyer's name, payment terms and item descriptions

  • HST is one rate (13%, 14% or 15%); do not split it

  • Quebec: QST 9.975% on its own line, QST number (1234567890 TQ 0001), invoice in French

  • Quebec restaurants, bars and taxis: a certified SRS (WEB-SRM, QR code) is required, and Nexus is not certified

  • Keep records 6 years; the CRA expects them in Canada unless it gives permission

Compliance for a Calgary business

As of October 2026 a Calgary business charges GST at 5% and no provincial tax on top, because Alberta has neither a PST nor the harmonised HST. In Skyline Nexus ERP the 5% rate is set up once and applied per line, and the tax report and the GST accounts in the general ledger are computed on the same basis, so the return agrees with the books.

Canada has no e-invoicing mandate, and a PDF invoice from Calgary is as valid as a paper one. The content still matters: from $100 the invoice must carry your GST registration number and the tax, and from $500 it must also name the customer, set out the payment terms and describe the goods. Keep the books six years, held in Canada unless the CRA has given permission.

Getting started from Calgary

The cleanest moment for a Calgary company to switch to Skyline Nexus ERP is the start of a fiscal year, with customer and supplier lists, an equipment register and a closing trial balance in hand. Contacts, products, opening stock, the chart of accounts and fixed assets load through CSV or Excel templates, and the trial balance goes onto the GL Opening Balances screen, which accepts it only when it balances.

The free trial covers the modules on this page, so a Calgary service company can open one contract as a project, raise a work order and post field costs before committing. Support runs remotely in English over WhatsApp, phone and e-mail, since Skyline Nexus has no branch in Alberta. Firms with large equipment fleets or several processing plants should book a demo so assets and locations are mapped first.

  1. Create the company in CAD with GST at 5% as its only sales tax and a fiscal year split into monthly periods.
  2. Import your equipment register as fixed assets and pick a depreciation method for each asset category.
  3. Open every active client contract as a project with its budget, milestones and cost centre.
  4. Register yards, plants and warehouses as business locations and load the opening stock for each.

Questions from Calgary businesses

Do Calgary businesses charge PST or HST?

No. As of October 2026 Alberta has no provincial sales tax and does not use the harmonised HST, so a Calgary business charges GST at 5% on taxable sales and reports it to the CRA. Skyline Nexus ERP holds that rate once and applies it on each invoice line, and the GST figures in the tax report match the ledger.

Does a Calgary company need e-invoicing or a special invoice format?

No. As of October 2026 Canada has no e-invoicing mandate, so a Calgary company may e-mail PDF invoices from Skyline Nexus ERP or print them. To support the buyer's input tax credits, invoices of $100 or more show your GST number and the tax, and invoices of $500 or more also show the buyer's name, payment terms and a description.

Can an oilfield service company in Calgary track job costs and equipment maintenance together?

Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP lets a Calgary oilfield service company open each client contract as a project with a budget, tag every cost to it, and keep its rental fleet in Asset Management with units-of-production depreciation where that fits. The CMMS module schedules preventive maintenance and work permits, and the EHS module records incidents and corrective actions.

Does Skyline Nexus ERP suit a food processor in Alberta?

Skyline Nexus ERP suits an Alberta food processor that needs production and stock control in the same system as its accounts. The MES module holds bills of materials, routings and production work orders, lot and expiry reports follow each batch, FIFO costing charges the oldest stock first, and weight-scale integration handles goods sold by weight.

Which languages can Calgary staff use in Skyline Nexus ERP?

Skyline Nexus ERP is available in English and Arabic, with interface translations for many other languages, including Canadian French, Spanish, Chinese, Hindi and Urdu, chosen from the language selector. A Calgary team can therefore work in English while a colleague uses another interface language; any untranslated label falls back to English.

When should a Calgary company switch to Skyline Nexus ERP?

A Calgary company usually switches to Skyline Nexus ERP most cleanly at the start of a fiscal year or quarter. Contacts, products, opening stock, fixed assets and the chart of accounts come in through import templates, and the closing trial balance from the old system is entered as balanced GL opening balances for the first period.

Can a Calgary distribution company run several warehouses in Skyline Nexus ERP?

Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP treats each warehouse as a business location with its own stock, so a Calgary distributor sees quantities per site, moves goods with stock transfers that track pending, in-transit and completed states, and reviews slow-moving lines in the Dead Stock and Stock Aging reports before reordering.
