How the calculation works
Adding VAT multiplies the net price by (1 + rate). Removing VAT divides the gross price by (1 + rate). Subtracting the rate from the gross price gives the wrong answer: 19% of 119 is 22.61, but the VAT included in 119 at 19% is 19.00. Amounts are rounded to two decimals at the end.
Inside the EU the rates differ, but the structure is shared: one standard rate of at least 15%, up to two reduced rates of at least 5%, and in some countries a super-reduced or parking rate. Business-to-business sales across borders are normally reverse-charged.
Frequently asked questions
Which countries does this VAT calculator cover?
All 27 EU member states, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Norway and Iceland, the Gulf states that levy VAT (Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain and Oman), Egypt, Jordan and Türkiye. Qatar and Kuwait are listed as having no VAT in force.
How do I add VAT to a price?
Multiply the net price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, a net price of 100 becomes 100 × 1.2 = 120, of which 20 is VAT.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the gross price by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100 net, so the VAT included is 20. Taking 20% of 120 (24) would be wrong.
Which EU country has the highest VAT rate?
Hungary, with a 27% standard rate. Finland (25.5%), Croatia, Denmark and Sweden (25%) follow. Luxembourg has the lowest standard rate in the EU at 17%.
Is GST the same as VAT?
Economically yes: both are taxes on consumption collected at each stage of the supply chain, with businesses reclaiming the tax on their purchases. Canada, Australia and others call it GST; Europe and the Gulf call it VAT.
