How the calculation works
Adding VAT multiplies the net price by (1 + rate). Removing VAT divides the gross price by (1 + rate). Subtracting the rate from the gross price gives the wrong answer: 19% of 119 is 22.61, but the VAT included in 119 at 19% is 19.00. Amounts are rounded to two decimals at the end.
Frequently asked questions
What is the VAT rate in the UAE?
The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%. There is no reduced rate: almost everything taxable is charged at the standard rate.
How do I add VAT to a net price?
Multiply the net price by 1.05 (1 plus the 5% standard rate). For example, AED 100.00 × 1.05 = AED 105.00, of which AED 5.00 is VAT.
How do I work out the VAT included in a gross price?
Divide the gross price by 1.05. For example, AED 105.00 ÷ 1.05 = AED 100.00 net, so the VAT included is AED 5.00. Taking 5% of the gross price would overstate the tax.
When does a business have to register for VAT in the UAE?
Mandatory registration when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the past 12 months or are expected to in the next 30 days; voluntary from AED 187,500. No threshold for non-residents
How often are VAT returns filed in the UAE?
Quarterly tax periods as standard; monthly for turnover of AED 150 million or more (or as FTA assigns); file and pay within 28 days of period end
