Rates raised 1 Jan 2024 (7.7 to 8.1, 2.5 to 2.6, 3.7 to 3.8). Parliament approved on 19 Jun 2026 a further +0.4 pt on the standard rate and +0.2 pt on accommodation from 2028 (reduced rate unchanged) to fund the 13th AHV pension; subject to a popular vote on 29 Nov 2026
How the calculation works
Adding VAT multiplies the net price by (1 + rate). Removing VAT divides the gross price by (1 + rate). Subtracting the rate from the gross price gives the wrong answer: 19% of 119 is 22.61, but the VAT included in 119 at 19% is 19.00. Amounts are rounded to two decimals at the end.
Frequently asked questions
What is the VAT rate in Switzerland?
The standard VAT rate in Switzerland is 8.1%. Other rates of 2.6% and 3.8% apply to the goods and services listed in the table on this page.
How do I add VAT to a net price?
Multiply the net price by 1.081 (1 plus the 8.1% standard rate). For example, CHF 100.00 × 1.081 = CHF 108.10, of which CHF 8.10 is VAT.
How do I work out the VAT included in a gross price?
Divide the gross price by 1.081. For example, CHF 108.10 ÷ 1.081 = CHF 100.00 net, so the VAT included is CHF 8.10. Taking 8.1% of the gross price would overstate the tax.
When does a business have to register for VAT in Switzerland?
