Vancouver at a glance
The City of Vancouver had about 662,000 residents at the 2021 census, and Statistics Canada counts about 37,000 business locations with employees within its boundaries. Head offices line Downtown and Coal Harbour, start-ups and studios have moved into Mount Pleasant, and the port lands along Burrard Inlet feed a trade economy that stretches to the airport in Richmond.
Companies here register through BC Registries and Online Services, often join the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade and answer to two tax administrations: the CRA for GST and the BC Ministry of Finance for PST, each with its own registration and return. Skyline Nexus ERP holds both taxes, the stock and the general ledger in one system, so neither return starts from a spreadsheet.
Vancouver's technology firms range from young start-ups in Mount Pleasant to established software companies downtown, hiring graduates from the University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University. One detail regularly surprises founders: BC PST reaches software and some services as well as goods, so a subscription sold locally can carry two taxes while the same product sold elsewhere carries one.
Skyline Nexus ERP keeps GST and PST as separate tax rates that can be combined in a tax group and chosen per line, so each invoice carries exactly the taxes that apply. The Projects module holds milestones, budgets and contracts for implementation work, the CRM tracks leads, follow-ups and proposals, and cost centres show which product line earns money.
The Port of Vancouver on Burrard Inlet and Vancouver International Airport in Richmond make the region a gateway for trans-Pacific trade. Around them work freight forwarders, importers and wholesale distributors whose stock sits in several warehouses at once, whose suppliers often invoice in US dollars and whose margins depend on knowing what arrived, what moved and what is still on the dock.
Skyline Nexus ERP keeps stock per location, and a location can be flagged as a free zone or bonded store. Stock transfers carry a status of pending, in transit or completed together with the carrier. Purchases can be entered in another currency at a rate you set while the ledger stays in Canadian dollars, and CMMS work orders cover forklifts, dock equipment and racking.
Conventions at the Vancouver Convention Centre, cruise traffic through the port and shoppers at CF Pacific Centre keep downtown hotels, restaurants and tour operators busy for much of the year, with sharp peaks around large events. A restaurant group with outlets in Coal Harbour and Mount Pleasant needs stock and margin per outlet, not one total at month end.
Skyline Nexus ERP sets up each outlet as a business location with its own stock, invoice numbering and cash registers, and its POS includes kitchen and restaurant features. Supplier invoices post to the ledger once auto-posting is switched on, the Stock Expiry Report flags perishables before they are written off, and CMMS work orders keep kitchen equipment and guest areas in repair.
Compliance
Canada has no e-invoicing mandate and no federal QR or fiscal-device rule. A valid invoice is defined by what the buyer needs to claim input tax credits, in three tiers: under $100, $100-$499.99 and $500 or more. From $100 the invoice needs the GST/HST number and the tax; from $500 it also needs the buyer's name, payment terms and descriptions. Rates are GST 5%, HST 13% (ON), 14% (NS) or 15% (NB, NL, PE), and GST plus QST 9.975% in Quebec, PST 7% in BC, 6% in SK or RST 7% in MB. In Quebec, invoices must be in French. Restaurants, bars and taxis there must issue bills from a Revenu Quebec-certified sales recording system with a QR code, which Nexus is not. Keep records for 6 years; the CRA expects records in Canada unless it gives permission.
No e-invoicing mandate (B2B, B2C); PDF invoices are fine
Under $100: supplier name, date, total
$100-$499.99: add the GST/HST number, the tax (or an 'includes GST/HST' note) and the tax status of each line
$500+: add the buyer's name, payment terms and item descriptions
HST is one rate (13%, 14% or 15%); do not split it
Quebec: QST 9.975% on its own line, QST number (1234567890 TQ 0001), invoice in French
Quebec restaurants, bars and taxis: a certified SRS (WEB-SRM, QR code) is required, and Nexus is not certified
Keep records 6 years; the CRA expects them in Canada unless it gives permission

As of October 2026 a Vancouver business charges GST at 5% for the CRA and, where it applies, BC PST at 7%, which has its own provincial registration and return. PST reaches some services and software as well as goods, so a technology firm should confirm its position. Canada has no e-invoicing mandate, so PDF invoices issued from Skyline Nexus ERP are valid.
For a buyer to claim input tax credits, an invoice of $100 or more must show your GST registration number and the tax charged, and one of $500 or more also names the buyer, the payment terms and what was supplied. Smaller invoices need only your name, the date and the total. Books are kept for 6 years, in Canada unless the CRA permits otherwise.
Most Vancouver businesses arrive at Skyline Nexus ERP with a customer list, a product file and a trial balance from their accountant. The import templates take contacts with opening balances, products, opening stock and the chart of accounts as CSV or Excel files, while the trial balance figures go onto the GL Opening Balances screen, which saves only when debits and credits match.
The free trial includes the modules described here, enough for a Vancouver team to configure GST and PST, register a second warehouse and post a week of test transactions. Support is provided by WhatsApp, phone and e-mail in English, with no local office. Importers running several warehouses and restaurant groups opening new outlets should book a demo first.
A Vancouver software company may have to. As of October 2026 BC PST at 7% applies to software and to some services, not only to goods, and it is registered and filed separately from GST at 5%. Confirm your position with the BC Ministry of Finance; Skyline Nexus ERP then holds GST and PST as separate rates, combined in a tax group where both apply.
No. As of October 2026 neither Canada nor British Columbia requires e-invoicing between businesses or to consumers, so PDF and paper invoices remain valid. Skyline Nexus ERP issues PDF invoices, and what counts for the buyer's input tax credits is the content: your GST number and the tax from $100, and the buyer's name, terms and descriptions from $500.
Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP holds stock per business location, so a Vancouver importer sees quantities for each warehouse in the Location Wise Stock Report and values them with FIFO costing. Stock transfers between warehouses carry a pending, in-transit or completed status and the carrier's name, and purchases from foreign suppliers can be entered in their currency at a manual rate.
Skyline Nexus ERP gives a Vancouver restaurant group one business location per outlet, each with its own stock, cash registers and invoice numbering, and a POS with kitchen and restaurant features. Purchasing, supplier invoices and the general ledger run centrally, so food cost and margin can be compared outlet by outlet.
Yes, within a clear scope. Skyline Nexus ERP lets a Vancouver business record a purchase in US dollars or another currency with an exchange rate entered by hand, and the document shows the foreign amounts. The ledger itself is kept in Canadian dollars, so your accountant books any period-end exchange difference on open balances as a journal.
The Skyline Nexus ERP free trial opens the modules described on this page, including accounting, stock, POS, projects and CMMS, so a team can post test transactions and run a trial balance first. Imports of contacts, products and opening stock work during the trial, and the price shown on this page applies once you continue.
Yes. The CMMS module in Skyline Nexus ERP records each forklift, dock leveller or rack as equipment, raises work orders and maintenance requests against it and schedules planned preventive maintenance. Work permits and warranty claims are kept on the same record, which gives a Vancouver warehouse operator a service history for every machine on the floor.
Skyline Nexus ERP is a cloud service run by Skyline Industrial Solution. We have no office in Vancouver; support is by WhatsApp, phone and e-mail.
