Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town at a glance
The City of Cape Town counted about 4.77 million residents in the 2022 census. Its business map runs from the CBD and Foreshore, where insurers and asset managers keep head offices, past the hotels and restaurants of the V&A Waterfront and the office parks of Century City, to the factories and distribution sheds of Epping and Montague Gardens.
Companies register with the CIPC and SARS, while the Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Wesgro and the provincial economic development department help with trade and investment. Seasonal tourism, export contracts and quickly growing service firms all stretch the same small finance team. Skyline Nexus ERP lets that team work from one set of books instead of juggling separate tools.
Cape Town's visitor economy peaks in the southern summer, when the V&A Waterfront, the conference calendar at the Cape Town International Convention Centre and the nearby winelands draw international guests. Restaurant groups, boutique hotels, tour operators and caterers staff up and buy more for those months, then carry the same rent and loan repayments through a much quieter winter.
Skyline Nexus ERP lets a hospitality group plan the year with monthly budgets per cost centre and compare them in Budget vs Actual, so a slow July is planned rather than discovered. Each outlet is a business location with its own stock and tills, a selling price group can hold season pricing, and the POS covers kitchen and table service.
Insurers, asset managers and fund administrators keep large offices on the Foreshore and in Century City, and a ring of smaller firms works for them: brokers, actuarial consultants, claims assessors and fintech start-ups. These firms bill monthly retainers and project fees, hold client money in separate bank accounts and must close each month cleanly for their own auditors.
Skyline Nexus ERP supports that discipline with fiscal periods that can be soft-closed and reopened, or locked for good once a month is reported. Journals at or above a threshold you set go for approval, bank accounts are reconciled against imported statements in Treasury, and AR ageing in 30-day buckets shows which retainers are overdue before the month-end meeting.
Cape Town has become a base for software companies and for business process outsourcing, with contact centres in Century City and the CBD serving clients overseas. Revenue is usually billed per seat, per hour or per project, often in a foreign currency, and a growing firm signs new client contracts every quarter while recruiting staff at the same pace.
In Skyline Nexus ERP each client contract can run as a project with milestones and a budget, and the CRM tracks leads, follow-ups, campaigns and proposals until the contract is signed. Sales to overseas clients can be invoiced in pounds, euros or dollars at a rate you enter, with the books kept in rand, and cost centres show margin per client account.
Compliance
South Africa has no e-invoicing or QR mandate yet. Nexus invoices that carry the VAT Act s20 content (TAX INVOICE title, both VAT numbers above R5,000, 15% VAT in ZAR) are valid tax invoices today. Keep an eye on SARS's VAT Modernisation consultation (mandate expected after 2028).
VAT 15%; compulsory registration above R2.3m (from 1 Apr 2026)
Full tax invoice above R5,000 needs customer VAT number; abridged below
No e-invoicing, QR or certified software required today
Keep records 5 years; offshore storage needs SARS authorisation
Skyline's own SaaS sales: register as FSES above R2.3m unless B2B-only
Checked 2026-10-10.
As of October 2026 a Cape Town business charges VAT at 15%, and registration is compulsory once turnover passes R2.3m, the threshold in force from 1 April 2026. Sales above R5,000 need a full tax invoice with both parties' VAT numbers, while smaller ones can use an abridged invoice. Skyline Nexus ERP prints both from separate POS and sales layouts, and SARS accepts PDF invoices without prior approval.
E-invoicing is voluntary for now. SARS's consultation on a Digital VAT Model stays open until 16 October 2026, mandatory e-invoicing and e-reporting would follow through phased regulations, and a mandate is expected after 2028. Keep records for 5 years. Holding them on servers outside South Africa requires SARS authorisation, so ask us before you sign up and we will explain where the data sits.
Getting a Cape Town business into Skyline Nexus ERP is mostly a matter of exports and templates. Contacts with opening balances, products, opening stock and the chart of accounts come in as CSV or Excel files, general ledger opening balances are typed onto one balancing screen, and a recent bank statement can be imported into Treasury to start reconciliation from a known figure.
Once the SARS storage question is clear, the free trial opens the modules on this page, so a team can run a busy weekend's sales and a month-end close as a rehearsal. Support comes by WhatsApp, phone and e-mail in English, with no local office. Hospitality groups preparing for the season and BPO firms with many client contracts should book a demo.
No. As of October 2026 e-invoicing in South Africa is voluntary, and a Cape Town business can e-mail PDF tax invoices from Skyline Nexus ERP. SARS is consulting on a Digital VAT Model until 16 October 2026; mandatory e-invoicing and e-reporting would come through phased regulations, with a mandate expected after 2028.
A Cape Town business must register for VAT once its turnover passes R2.3m, the compulsory threshold that applies from 1 April 2026, replacing the earlier R1m. The standard rate is 15%. Skyline Nexus ERP applies that rate per invoice line and computes the tax report and the VAT accounts in the ledger on the same basis.
Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP gives a restaurant group one business location per outlet, so a venue at the V&A Waterfront and another in the CBD each keep their own stock, tills and numbering. The POS supports kitchen and table service, and monthly budgets per cost centre help plan the quieter winter.
Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP lets a Cape Town contact centre raise invoices in pounds, euros or US dollars with an exchange rate entered by hand, and the invoice shows the foreign amounts. The books stay in rand, so any exchange difference on unpaid balances at month end is posted by the accountant as a journal.
Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP lets a Cape Town brokerage soft-close a month while late items are checked, then lock it so nothing more can post. Journals above a set threshold need approval, the Audit Trail records who posted or reversed each entry, and Treasury reconciles each bank account against its imported statement.
A Cape Town business moves into Skyline Nexus ERP with import templates for contacts and their opening balances, products, opening stock and the chart of accounts, in CSV or Excel. The general ledger opening balances are entered on one screen that only saves when debits equal credits, and bank statements are imported into Treasury.
SARS authorisation is required when South African records are kept outside the country, and Skyline Nexus ERP is a cloud service. A Cape Town business should therefore contact us before signing up, so we can explain where the data is held and you can decide whether to apply. Records must be kept for 5 years.
Skyline Nexus ERP is a cloud service run by Skyline Industrial Solution. We have no office in Cape Town; support is by WhatsApp, phone and e-mail.
