Durban at a glance
eThekwini, the metropolitan municipality that includes Durban, counted about 4.2 million residents in the 2022 census. Shipping lines and freight forwarders cluster around the Point and the harbour, component makers and warehouses fill Prospecton, Pinetown and Westmead host long-established manufacturers, and Umhlanga Ridge has grown into a business and shopping address around Gateway Theatre of Shopping.
Firms register with the CIPC, account to SARS for VAT and customs, and meet through the Durban Chamber of Commerce and Industry, while some exporters near King Shaka International Airport operate inside the Dube TradePort Special Economic Zone. Many share one complaint: stock, freight costs and invoices live in different places. Skyline Nexus ERP brings them into one ledger.
The harbour sits at the centre of Durban's economy, and around it work clearing agents, freight forwarders, hauliers and importers whose stock is often split between a bonded store, a city warehouse and goods still at sea. Every consignment carries freight, duties and handling charges that must reach the right cost lines before anyone can judge the margin on it.
Skyline Nexus ERP keeps stock per location, and a location can be marked as a free zone or bonded store, so goods under customs control are counted apart from duty-paid stock. Stock transfers record the carrier, status and shipping charges, purchases can be entered in the supplier's currency at a manual rate, and CMMS work orders keep trucks and forklifts on schedule.
Toyota South Africa's plant in Prospecton anchors an automotive cluster of component makers, toolrooms, packaging suppliers and logistics partners spread across the south of the city and inland towards Pinetown. These suppliers build to the call-offs of large customers, hold parts in many variants with little spare stock and must show maintenance and quality records whenever a customer audits them.
In Skyline Nexus ERP the MES module gives every part number a bill of materials and a routing through the work centres of each plant, and production work orders turn that route into actual cost. FIFO costing values components in the order they were bought, and the CMMS module schedules preventive maintenance on presses and moulding machines and tracks warranty claims.
The Golden Mile, uShaka and the hotels of Umhlanga draw domestic holidaymakers, including families from Gauteng during school holidays, while events at the Durban International Convention Centre fill rooms out of season. Hotels, beachfront restaurants and tour operators deal with sharp peaks, many small suppliers and a constant need to repair rooms, kitchens and pools in salty air.
Skyline Nexus ERP runs each hotel restaurant, bar or beach stall as a business location with its own stock and tills, and the POS handles kitchen and restaurant orders. In the CMMS module a guest's complaint becomes a maintenance request and then a work order, preventive tasks keep pool pumps and air-conditioning serviced, and supplier invoices post to the ledger.
Compliance
South Africa has no e-invoicing or QR mandate yet. Nexus invoices that carry the VAT Act s20 content (TAX INVOICE title, both VAT numbers above R5,000, 15% VAT in ZAR) are valid tax invoices today. Keep an eye on SARS's VAT Modernisation consultation (mandate expected after 2028).
VAT 15%; compulsory registration above R2.3m (from 1 Apr 2026)
Full tax invoice above R5,000 needs customer VAT number; abridged below
No e-invoicing, QR or certified software required today
Keep records 5 years; offshore storage needs SARS authorisation
Skyline's own SaaS sales: register as FSES above R2.3m unless B2B-only
Checked 2026-10-10.
As of October 2026 a Durban business charges VAT at 15% and must register once turnover passes R2.3m, the threshold from 1 April 2026. For importers and exporters at the port, SARS has required invoice data in electronic customs declarations since 1 April 2025, so supplier and customer invoices need to be accurate and quick to retrieve from Skyline Nexus ERP when a declaration is prepared.
E-invoicing is not mandatory yet: SARS is consulting on VAT modernisation with comments due by 16 October 2026, and phased e-invoicing rules are expected after 2028. A tax invoice above R5,000 must show the customer's VAT number. Records are kept for 5 years, and keeping them outside South Africa requires SARS authorisation, so ask us before you sign up.
A Durban importer or manufacturer is wise to start with the product master, because part numbers, units and suppliers drive everything else. Skyline Nexus ERP imports products, opening stock per location, contacts with opening balances and the chart of accounts from CSV or Excel templates, while ledger opening balances are entered on one screen that must balance before it saves.
Once the SARS storage question has been answered, the free trial opens the modules on this page, so a team can run a production order or a transfer out of the harbour warehouse from start to finish. Help is available in English over WhatsApp, phone and e-mail, and there is no walk-in office in KwaZulu-Natal. Manufacturers with several plants and forwarders with bonded stores should book a demo.
Not yet. As of October 2026 South Africa has no e-invoicing mandate, and a Durban importer can issue PDF tax invoices from Skyline Nexus ERP. Since 1 April 2025, however, SARS has required invoice data in electronic customs declarations, so accurate supplier invoices matter at the port. A phased e-invoicing mandate is expected after 2028.
A Durban business charges VAT at 15% and must register once turnover passes R2.3m, the compulsory threshold since 1 April 2026. Sales above R5,000 need a full tax invoice with the customer's VAT number. Skyline Nexus ERP applies the 15% rate per line and keeps the tax report and the ledger's VAT accounts on the same basis.
Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP lets a Durban forwarder flag a business location as a free zone or bonded store, so goods under customs control are held and reported separately from duty-paid stock. Transfers out of the bonded store record the carrier, status and shipping charges, and the Location Wise Stock Report shows each site's quantities.
Skyline Nexus ERP suits a Prospecton component supplier that wants production, stock and maintenance in one system. The MES module holds bills of materials, routings, work centres and production work orders, FIFO costing values parts as they are consumed, and the CMMS module plans preventive maintenance on presses and moulding machines.
Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP records a purchase in US dollars, euros or another currency at an exchange rate a Durban company enters by hand, and the document shows the foreign amounts. The ledger is kept in rand, so exchange differences on unpaid supplier balances are booked as a journal by the accountant at period end.
During the Skyline Nexus ERP free trial a manufacturer can import products and opening stock, build a bill of materials and routing, run a production work order through to finished goods, schedule maintenance on one machine and post the resulting costs to the ledger. Ask us about SARS authorisation for records stored abroad before you begin.
Yes. The CMMS module in Skyline Nexus ERP turns a Durban hotel's maintenance requests into work orders, schedules preventive tasks for pumps, lifts and air-conditioning and records warranty claims on each item of equipment. Skyline Nexus is not a reservation system, so bookings stay in the hotel's existing system while stock, tills and accounts run here.
Skyline Nexus ERP is a cloud service run by Skyline Industrial Solution. We have no office in Durban; support is by WhatsApp, phone and e-mail.
