Doing business in Jammu and Kashmir

Jammu and Kashmir's economy splits between two regions. The Kashmir valley lives on tourism in Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam, on apples, walnuts and saffron from its orchards and fields, and on handicrafts such as pashmina shawls, carpets and papier-mache. Jammu adds pilgrim traffic through Katra to Mata Vaishno Devi, the Raghunath Bazaar trade and industrial estates in Jammu, Samba and Kathua districts, such as Bari Brahmana.

A Jammu and Kashmir business carries a GSTIN starting with 01. Local matters go to bodies such as the Jammu Municipal Corporation and the district administrations of Srinagar and Jammu. Many family firms run a shop in Srinagar's Lal Chowk and a showroom or godown in Jammu, moving with the seasons, which makes one shared set of books valuable.

Modules Jammu and Kashmir businesses start with

Hotels, houseboats and pilgrim services

Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir peaks in spring and summer in the valley and around festivals in Katra. A Srinagar operator may own houseboats on Dal Lake, a hotel and a travel desk; a Katra hotel serves pilgrims around the year with a restaurant and shops. Each needs takings by unit, kitchen stock and a quick view of costs when visitors fall away.

Skyline Nexus ERP provides a POS with cash registers and restaurant and kitchen features, with every hotel, houseboat or shop set up as a business location with its own invoice series and stock. With auto-posting switched on, sales and food cost reach the ledger as bills are finalised, and branch statements show which Jammu and Kashmir unit carries the season.

Apples, saffron and handicraft trade

Kashmir's fruit trade moves through mandis such as Sopore, where growers, commission agents and transporters settle accounts across the harvest. Saffron and dry fruit are sold to buyers across India. Handicraft dealers buy pashmina, carpets and carved woodwork from artisans, often on advance, and sell on credit to retailers in other States, so purchases and receivables both stretch over months.

Skyline Nexus ERP records purchases from growers and artisans, supplier payments and customer receipts as journals, and keeps contacts with GSTIN, opening balances and AR ageing. Stock is held by location and valued on FIFO or LIFO, so a Jammu and Kashmir dealer knows what each shawl or carton cost. CRM tracks enquiries and proposals from retailers elsewhere in India.

From POS to balance sheet for a Jammu and Kashmir trader

Think of a pashmina dealer with a Srinagar showroom and a Jammu godown. Typical billing apps print GST bills and count stock, but the books are often kept in an accountant's package or spreadsheet and rebuilt at year end. Credit-book apps track who owes what, not stock or purchases. Separate accounting packages offer sound books, but showroom sales must be exported or re-keyed.

Skyline Nexus ERP posts a balanced journal for each final sale once Auto-post Sales Transactions is on, covering sales, output tax, cost of goods and inventory, and posts purchases, payments and expenses the same way. The trial balance, profit and loss and balance sheet are current for each Jammu and Kashmir branch or consolidated.

India tax integration

Taxes and compliance in India

Jammu and Kashmir has GST State code 01: every GSTIN registered in Jammu and Kashmir starts with 01. Sales inside Jammu and Kashmir carry CGST + SGST; sales to another State carry IGST. A branch in another State needs its own GSTIN and the right place of supply on each invoice: in Skyline Nexus ERP you choose the intra-State or inter-State tax group on the sale.

Built in today

  • GST rates in force since 22 September 2025 (5%, 18%, 40%; 0.25%, 1.5% and 3% for stones and jewellery) and older rates for past periods; a cess as an extra component of a tax group.

  • Tax groups combining CGST + SGST (or UTGST) into one rate, plus IGST rates, set per product and chosen per sale.

  • Prices entered tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive per product; the POS works out the tax either way.

  • Your GSTIN as the business tax number and the customer's GSTIN on the contact record, both printed on invoices.

  • An HSN column on invoices from the product category code, an editable invoice heading (for example "Tax Invoice" or "Bill of Supply") and a receipt design that prints each tax component in its own column.

  • Credit notes for sales returns, debit notes for sales and purchases, and purchase returns.

  • With auto-posting on, every final sale, return, purchase and expense posts output or input tax to its own ledger account, matching the tax report.

  • Branches with their own invoice numbering and invoice layout; a branch's own GSTIN can be printed on its invoices from a location field.

Ready for your accountant

  • Tax report: input tax on purchases, output tax on sales and tax on expenses for any period, branch or contact.

  • Trial balance, general ledger and day book with the input and output tax accounts, exported to Excel or PDF.

  • Audit Pack: one Excel workbook with trial balance, balance sheet, P&L, journals, sales, purchases and a ledger tax summary.

  • Sales and purchase lists your chartered accountant can use to prepare GST returns. Skyline Nexus ERP does not file returns itself.

Coming or on request (not live today)

  • Automatic CGST + SGST or IGST from the place of supply.

  • HSN and SAC codes per item with validation, and separate B2B, B2C and export invoice types.

  • GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B style summaries and input tax credit matching: ask us.

  • E-invoicing through the Invoice Registration Portal (IRN and signed QR): the India connector is built but not live. Ask us for your go-live date.

  • E-way bills and direct filing on the GST portal.

  • Reverse-charge marking for India, TDS and TCS.

  • Indian payroll items (PF, ESI, professional tax) are not offered: payroll in Skyline Nexus ERP is built for Saudi Arabia.

GST for a Jammu and Kashmir business

Jammu and Kashmir uses State code 01. Although it is a Union Territory, it has its own legislature, so it is outside the UTGST list: sales within Jammu and Kashmir carry CGST plus SGST at half the rate each, and sales to other States carry IGST. Registration is due above INR 20 lakh aggregate turnover, or INR 40 lakh for goods-only suppliers, except ice cream, pan masala and tobacco.

In Skyline Nexus ERP a Jammu and Kashmir business builds tax groups, such as CGST 9% plus SGST 9% and IGST 18%, and chooses intra-State or inter-State on each document, since place-of-supply switching is not automatic. HSN prints from the category code. Suppliers above INR 5 crore need IRNs, which Skyline Nexus ERP cannot generate yet; e-way bills and GSTR returns are not live yet.

Getting started from Jammu and Kashmir

To begin, a Jammu and Kashmir firm uses the Join the waitlist, Book a demo or Ask on WhatsApp buttons here. Help arrives by WhatsApp, phone and e-mail; nobody is based in the UT or elsewhere in India. Skyline Nexus ERP is a cloud service that needs internet and cannot bill offline, and it is configured with an April year, INR, dd-mm-yyyy dates and lakh and crore amounts in words.

Prepare items with opening stock per shop or godown as CSV, customers and suppliers with GSTIN and balances, and the chart of accounts. Hotels should list each property and outlet; traders should note which buyers sit in other States, since their invoices need the IGST group.

  1. List each Srinagar, Jammu or Katra shop, hotel or godown as a branch.
  2. Export shawl, carpet, fruit or menu items with category codes for HSN.
  3. Collect grower, artisan and buyer balances with GSTINs.
  4. Join the waitlist and book a demo before the tourist or harvest season.

Questions from Jammu and Kashmir businesses

Does Jammu and Kashmir use UTGST or SGST?

Jammu and Kashmir uses SGST, not UTGST, because the Union Territory has its own legislature. Local sales carry CGST plus SGST and sales to other States carry IGST, and every GSTIN there starts with 01. Skyline Nexus ERP lets the user set up both groups.

When must a Jammu and Kashmir handicraft seller register for GST?

A Jammu and Kashmir handicraft seller must register above INR 20 lakh aggregate turnover, or INR 40 lakh when supplying goods only. Some suppliers must register regardless of turnover under section 24 of the CGST Act, while specific relief exists for certain handicraft goods, so a seller shipping to other States should confirm the position with a tax adviser.

Can Skyline Nexus ERP handle a Srinagar houseboat and hotel group?

A Srinagar houseboat and hotel group can set up each unit as a business location in Skyline Nexus ERP, with its own invoice series, stock and cash registers. The restaurant POS handles kitchen orders, and branch-level profit and loss shows each unit's season.

Is Skyline Nexus ERP useful for an apple trader in Sopore?

An apple trader in Sopore can record purchases from growers, payments, stock by cold store and sales to buyers in other States in Skyline Nexus ERP. Receivables show AR ageing, and stock is costed on FIFO or LIFO so each lot's margin is visible.

How is Skyline Nexus ERP different from a billing app for a Jammu and Kashmir shop?

Many billing apps for a Jammu and Kashmir shop print bills and keep stock, while accounts are prepared elsewhere. Skyline Nexus ERP posts every final sale as a balanced journal once auto-posting is turned on, so the books stay current. Some other providers are ahead today on offline billing, IRN e-invoicing and e-way bills, which Skyline Nexus ERP does not have yet.

Which languages and currency does Skyline Nexus ERP support?

Skyline Nexus ERP has an English interface and a Hindi interface translation is available. INR can be the business currency, dates can be dd-mm-yyyy, and invoices can print the amount in words in lakh and crore, with an April financial year.

How does a Jammu business start with Skyline Nexus ERP?

A Jammu business can join the India waitlist, book a demo or ask on WhatsApp from this page. Skyline Nexus ERP imports products, opening stock, contacts with balances and the chart of accounts from CSV, so exporting those lists from current records is a good start.
