Cologne at a glance
Cologne is a city of just over 1 million people with an economy shaped by media, insurance and the automotive industry. Broadcasters and production companies cluster at the MediaPark, games studios and agencies have moved into Ehrenfeld, the Koelnmesse in Deutz brings exhibitors and visitors throughout the year, and the Ford plant in Niehl anchors a network of engineering suppliers across the region.
Companies register in the Handelsregister, join the IHK Köln and file Umsatzsteuer through ELSTER. For many of them the year is uneven: weeks of quiet planning, then a production or a fair that produces a flood of costs within days. Skyline Nexus ERP captures those costs against the right project as they arrive, so the books are not reconstructed afterwards from receipts in a drawer.
A TV production company in Cologne works to a commissioned budget, with crews, studios, licences and post-production booked against each programme. In Skyline Nexus ERP every production becomes a project with tasks, milestones, a budget and a contract, and each purchase, expense and supplier invoice is tagged to it, so the producer sees overruns while filming is still under way.
Games studios bill publishers by milestone and often for customers abroad. Skyline Nexus can issue those invoices in another currency at an entered rate while the books stay in euros, and the reverse charge note belongs on invoices to EU business clients. The CRM keeps pitches, follow-ups and proposals, and cost centres separate development, marketing and overheads in the reports.
Insurers and financial service companies have a strong presence in Cologne, and around them work brokers, loss adjusters, IT providers and advisory firms. These businesses need clean, comparable statements more than complex operations. Skyline Nexus ERP produces the trial balance, profit and loss, balance sheet, cash flow and changes in equity from one ledger, with comparisons to the previous period or year.
Month end is enforced by the system: a period can be soft-closed and reopened, or locked for good, and the year-end close posts its closing entries to retained earnings only once every journal of the year is posted. Roles decide who sees what, down to view-own or view-all rights, so a Cologne broker can give staff access without opening the whole ledger.
The Ford plant in Köln-Niehl and the engineering firms of the region sustain suppliers that deliver against tight schedules. Skyline Nexus ERP turns a customer order into a sales order, delivery notes and shipments, while the MES module holds the bills of materials, routings and work centres behind each part and plans production as work orders.
Machines that stop put deliveries at risk, so maintenance belongs in the same system. Skyline Nexus keeps presses, CNC centres and tooling in the asset register with depreciation, and the CMMS records breakdown requests, work orders with downtime hours and PPM schedules. Inventory is valued by FIFO, the IFRS-compatible method, and cost of goods sold follows the lot actually consumed.
Compliance
Germany: invoices must carry the § 14 UStG mandatory details; Nexus generates XRechnung/ZUGFeRD e-invoices (EN 16931) for the 2027/2028 e-invoicing obligation. Nexus has no TSE, so use a separate certified till for cash-register sales.
Every invoice needs your Steuernummer or USt-IdNr., a sequential invoice number, the supply date and VAT per rate (§ 14 Abs. 4 UStG).
Invoices up to EUR 250 gross may be simplified (Kleinbetragsrechnung, § 33 UStDV) – not for intra-EU supplies or reverse charge.
Kleinunternehmer (§ 19 UStG): previous year ≤ EUR 25,000 and current year ≤ EUR 100,000 – no VAT, plus a note on the exemption.
Reverse charge invoices must state "Steuerschuldnerschaft des Leistungsempfängers"; intra-EU supplies need both VAT IDs and an exemption note.
E-invoices: all businesses must receive them since 2025; issuing is mandatory from 2027 (turnover > EUR 800,000) and from 2028 for everyone. Nexus generates XRechnung and ZUGFeRD.
Public-sector customers need XRechnung with a Leitweg-ID – enter it on the contact.
Keep invoices for 8 years (§ 14b UStG, § 147 AO); keep the e-invoice XML unaltered.
GiroCode payment QR is optional and can be switched on per invoice layout. Cash registers need a TSE (§ 146a AO) – Nexus does not provide one.
Checked 2026-10-03. Germany: full compliance guide
Cologne businesses invoice under § 14 UStG. As of October 2026 that means 19% or 7% Umsatzsteuer, a sequential number, the date of supply and the seller's tax number or VAT ID on every invoice. A small receipt up to EUR 250 gross may be a simplified Kleinbetragsrechnung. Invoices and booking records are kept for 8 years, books and annual accounts for 10.
On e-invoicing, all businesses have had to accept electronic invoices since 1 January 2025. Domestic B2B issuing becomes mandatory on 1 January 2027 above EUR 800,000 of prior-year turnover and on 1 January 2028 for everyone. Skyline Nexus ERP generates XRechnung 3.0 and ZUGFeRD 2.3 files. Cash registers still need a TSE under § 146a AO, which Skyline Nexus does not supply.
Production companies in Cologne begin by importing clients and setting up their running projects, manufacturers by loading components and opening stock and building BOMs, and finance service firms by importing the chart of accounts. In every case customers and suppliers come in with open balances, and GL opening balances are entered on a screen that saves only when debits equal credits.
The free trial is enough to run a test production budget or a week of manufacturing orders with real data. Support is by WhatsApp, phone and e-mail in English, and Skyline Nexus ERP has no office in Cologne. Manufacturers planning MES production, and groups with several companies, should book a demo before migrating.
Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP lets a Cologne TV production company set up each programme as a project with tasks, milestones, a budget and a contract. Crew, studio and post-production costs are tagged to the project as they are booked, so overruns appear during production, and the profit of each programme is visible in the ledger once it is invoiced.
No. A shop in Cologne needs a cash register with a TSE for counter sales, and Skyline Nexus ERP does not provide one. The shop keeps its TSE-equipped till and posts daily takings to Skyline Nexus, which manages branch stock, transfers between shops, purchasing, supplier invoices and the accounts behind the counter.
Skyline Nexus ERP gives an automotive supplier sales orders, delivery notes and shipments, MES work orders with bills of materials and routings, and FIFO stock valuation. Machines and tooling sit in the asset register, and the CMMS records breakdowns, downtime hours and planned maintenance, so production, maintenance and margins are reported from one ledger.
As of October 2026, a Cologne company must issue domestic B2B e-invoices from 1 January 2027 if its turnover in the previous year exceeded EUR 800,000; smaller companies follow from 1 January 2028. Receiving e-invoices has been mandatory for everyone since 1 January 2025. Skyline Nexus ERP generates XRechnung and ZUGFeRD files for the issuing side.
Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP generates an XRechnung 3.0 file from the sale once E-invoicing (Germany) is switched on, using the Leitweg-ID stored on the City of Cologne's contact record. The supplier downloads the file and submits it through the channel the city specifies, because Skyline Nexus prepares e-invoices but does not transmit them.
Skyline Nexus ERP is available in English and Arabic, with interface translations for many other languages including German, Turkish and Dutch; screens that are not yet translated fall back to English. Each user picks a language, so a mixed team can work side by side. The books are kept in euros, and invoices can be issued in other currencies.
A Cologne company migrates to Skyline Nexus ERP by importing its chart of accounts, customers and suppliers with open balances, and products with opening stock from spreadsheet templates. GL opening balances are entered on one balancing screen. The usual cut-over is a month end, so the opening figures in Skyline Nexus match the last closed month of the old system.
Skyline Nexus ERP is a cloud service run by Skyline Industrial Solution. We have no office in Cologne; support is by WhatsApp, phone and e-mail.
