Doing business in Stuttgart

Stuttgart has around 610,000 inhabitants and sits at the centre of one of Germany's densest industrial regions. Car plants in Untertürkheim and Zuffenhausen are surrounded by component makers and machine builders, the Feuerbach industrial district hosts engineering workshops, software firms gather in the STEP technology park in Vaihingen, and banks and insurers keep large offices in Stuttgart-Mitte.

The typical company here is a family-owned Mittelstand firm registered in the Handelsregister and a member of the IHK Region Stuttgart, often with a sister company in Esslingen or Ludwigsburg. Its finance team handles Umsatzsteuer through ELSTER, export paperwork and project costing at once. Skyline Nexus ERP brings those tasks onto one ledger, so a machine's cost and its invoice never drift apart.

Modules Stuttgart businesses start with

Automotive suppliers and special machine builders

A Stuttgart machine builder rarely makes the same machine twice, so each order is really a project. Skyline Nexus ERP runs it as one, with milestones, a budget, a contract and material requisitions, and once auto-posting of material issues is switched on, components issued to the project post to work in progress. The project budget shows early whether a machine will make money.

Series suppliers to the car plants need the opposite: repeatable bills of materials, routings and work centres. The MES module of Skyline Nexus plans their production as work orders, purchase orders go out to sub-suppliers from the same system, and quotations and proformas come before the final invoice. Stock is valued by FIFO, the IFRS-compatible method, per plant or warehouse.

ICT, software and engineering consultancies

IT consultancies and engineering-software firms in Vaihingen and the city centre sell implementation projects and support to industrial customers. Skyline Nexus ERP runs an implementation as a project with tasks, milestones and a contract, while the support tickets module records each customer request after go-live. The CRM covers leads, campaigns and proposals, so pre-sales effort is visible next to the revenue it wins.

Consultants travel to client sites, which creates a steady stream of receipts. In Skyline Nexus the Treasury module handles cash advances, expense claims with an ageing view, and petty cash, and each expense can carry the project and cost centre it belongs to. The firm sees the true margin of a customer project, not just the hours billed.

Financial service firms

Stuttgart's banks and insurers rely on a ring of service companies: IT providers, brokers, advisory firms and back-office specialists. What these firms need from an ERP is planning discipline. Skyline Nexus ERP lets them draw up annual, quarterly or monthly budgets per account and cost centre, submit them for approval, import them from a spreadsheet and then follow them in the Budget vs Actual report.

Management reporting comes straight from the ledger: profit and loss with a previous-year comparison, a balance sheet split into current and non-current items, the EBIT & EBITDA report and the Cost Center Analysis. Because every figure links back to its journal and source document in Skyline Nexus, a controller can answer a board question without exporting data first.

Compliance

What applies in Germany

Germany: invoices must carry the § 14 UStG mandatory details; Nexus generates XRechnung/ZUGFeRD e-invoices (EN 16931) for the 2027/2028 e-invoicing obligation. Nexus has no TSE, so use a separate certified till for cash-register sales.

  • Every invoice needs your Steuernummer or USt-IdNr., a sequential invoice number, the supply date and VAT per rate (§ 14 Abs. 4 UStG).

  • Invoices up to EUR 250 gross may be simplified (Kleinbetragsrechnung, § 33 UStDV) – not for intra-EU supplies or reverse charge.

  • Kleinunternehmer (§ 19 UStG): previous year ≤ EUR 25,000 and current year ≤ EUR 100,000 – no VAT, plus a note on the exemption.

  • Reverse charge invoices must state "Steuerschuldnerschaft des Leistungsempfängers"; intra-EU supplies need both VAT IDs and an exemption note.

  • E-invoices: all businesses must receive them since 2025; issuing is mandatory from 2027 (turnover > EUR 800,000) and from 2028 for everyone. Nexus generates XRechnung and ZUGFeRD.

  • Public-sector customers need XRechnung with a Leitweg-ID – enter it on the contact.

  • Keep invoices for 8 years (§ 14b UStG, § 147 AO); keep the e-invoice XML unaltered.

  • GiroCode payment QR is optional and can be switched on per invoice layout. Cash registers need a TSE (§ 146a AO) – Nexus does not provide one.

Compliance for a Stuttgart business

Many Stuttgart firms sell abroad, so the invoice detail matters. As of October 2026 a domestic invoice carries 19% or 7% Umsatzsteuer, the seller's tax number or VAT ID, a sequential number and the supply date. Intra-EU deliveries need both VAT IDs and an exemption note, and reverse charge invoices must state Steuerschuldnerschaft des Leistungsempfängers. The retention period for invoices is 8 years.

Receiving e-invoices has been mandatory for all German businesses since 1 January 2025. From 1 January 2027 suppliers with previous-year turnover above EUR 800,000 must issue domestic B2B invoices as e-invoices, and from 1 January 2028 every business must. Skyline Nexus ERP generates XRechnung 3.0 and ZUGFeRD 2.3 files, with the Leitweg-ID stored on public-sector contacts in Baden-Württemberg.

Getting started from Stuttgart

A Stuttgart Mittelstand firm usually moves at a fiscal-year start. Products, components and opening stock are imported per plant from spreadsheet templates, customers and suppliers follow with open balances, and the chart of accounts comes in as CSV or XLSX. GL opening balances are entered on a balancing screen, and running machine orders are set up as projects with their remaining budgets.

The free trial is long enough to cost one real machine order or one consulting project end to end. Support is by WhatsApp, phone and e-mail in English; Skyline Nexus ERP has no Stuttgart office. Firms with several plants or a group of companies in the region should book a demo so that locations, projects and cost centres are designed together.

  1. Set up each plant or warehouse as a business location and import products and opening stock for it.
  2. Create your open machine orders or client engagements as projects with budgets and milestones.
  3. Switch on auto-posting for sales, purchases and material issues, and map WIP and material consumption accounts.
  4. Enable E-invoicing (Germany) and test both an XRechnung and a ZUGFeRD invoice before 2027.

Questions from Stuttgart businesses

Can a Stuttgart machine builder cost each machine as a project in Skyline Nexus ERP?

Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP lets a Stuttgart machine builder run each machine order as a project with milestones, a budget, a contract and material requisitions. With auto-posting of material issues switched on, components issued to the project post to work in progress, so the budget report shows the expected margin while the machine is still being built.

Does Skyline Nexus ERP suit an IT consultancy in Stuttgart-Vaihingen?

Skyline Nexus ERP suits an IT consultancy that sells projects and support. Implementations run as projects with milestones and contracts, customer requests after go-live go into the support tickets module, and the CRM tracks pre-sales. Travel expenses, cash advances and expense claims are recorded in Treasury against the right project.

When does a Stuttgart supplier have to send e-invoices?

As of October 2026, a Stuttgart supplier with more than EUR 800,000 turnover in the previous year must issue domestic B2B e-invoices from 1 January 2027, and smaller suppliers from 1 January 2028. Every business has had to receive e-invoices since 1 January 2025. Skyline Nexus ERP generates XRechnung and ZUGFeRD files; the supplier delivers them to the customer.

How should a Stuttgart company invoice customers in other EU countries?

A Stuttgart company invoicing business customers elsewhere in the EU shows both VAT IDs and the exemption note for an intra-EU delivery, or the reverse charge wording for services, and charges no German VAT. In Skyline Nexus ERP the customer's tax number is stored on the contact, and a separate invoice layout can carry the required wording.

Can Skyline Nexus ERP manage budgets for a financial services firm?

Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP supports annual, quarterly or monthly budgets per account and cost centre, with an approval step and spreadsheet import. The Budget vs Actual report shows variance and utilisation, and the Cost Center Analysis and EBIT & EBITDA reports give a financial services firm in Stuttgart its management view straight from the ledger.

Can international engineers in Stuttgart use Skyline Nexus ERP in English?

Yes. Skyline Nexus ERP is available in English and Arabic, with interface translations for many other languages including German, Italian and Turkish, and each user chooses a language. Untranslated screens fall back to English. A Stuttgart firm keeps its books in euros and can invoice customers abroad in their currency at an entered exchange rate.

What should a Stuttgart company test during the Skyline Nexus ERP trial?

During the Skyline Nexus ERP trial a Stuttgart company should cost one real order end to end: import the components, create the project or MES work order, issue material, invoice the customer and check the result in the trial balance. Running one complete cycle shows quickly whether the set-up fits before the wider migration starts.
