Doing business across Tamil Nadu

Tamil Nadu is rarely a one-city market. A typical owner buys yarn in Coimbatore, has knitting done in Tiruppur, sells through a showroom in Madurai and ships from Chennai or Thoothukudi. The State's industrial corridors stretch from the Sriperumbudur and Oragadam belt west of Chennai to Hosur on the Karnataka border, and the coastal ports at Chennai, Ennore and Thoothukudi tie them to export buyers.

Guidance Tamil Nadu, the State's investment promotion agency, is the usual first door for larger projects, while urban local bodies under the Municipal Administration Department issue trade licences city by city. Units in the MEPZ Special Economic Zone near Tambaram follow their own customs rules. For a Tamil Nadu group the admin burden is keeping several towns, several counters and one set of books in step.

Modules Tamil Nadu businesses start with

Tamil Nadu manufacturers: from bill of materials to cost of goods

Engineering is the backbone of Tamil Nadu industry: auto components around Sriperumbudur, pumps and motors in Coimbatore, and supplier workshops in Hosur and Tiruchirappalli. These plants run on work orders, raw-material issues and finished-goods receipts, and their customers expect delivery against a purchase order. Margins depend on knowing the real cost of each lot.

Skyline Nexus ERP covers this with its manufacturing module: work orders, bills of materials and routings, with raw materials consumed from stock. Skyline Nexus values stock by FIFO or LIFO, and that cost drives cost of goods sold when the finished item is invoiced. Cost centres let a Tamil Nadu group compare one plant with another, and budgets can be set against actuals for each.

Textile and wholesale trade between Tamil Nadu towns

The State's textile chain runs through several districts at once. Spinning mills around Coimbatore sell yarn, Tiruppur turns it into knitwear, Madurai and its surroundings keep handloom and Sungudi weaving alive, and Chennai's George Town wholesalers redistribute goods to the whole south. Each hand-off is a sale, a purchase and a stock movement that has to be recorded.

Skyline Nexus ERP treats each warehouse or shop as a business location with its own stock, its own invoice numbering and its own payment methods. Goods can be transferred between Tamil Nadu locations and reported location-wise; note that a transfer moves stock but does not post to the ledger. Users can be limited to the branches they work in, so a Madurai cashier never sees the Coimbatore counter.

From POS to balance sheet for a multi-city Tamil Nadu group

Picture a Tamil Nadu textile group with a Chennai head office, a Coimbatore yarn depot and two retail counters. Typical billing apps print GST bills and keep stock counts at each counter, but the books are often kept elsewhere, in an accountant's package or a spreadsheet, so the trial balance is rebuilt at month or year end. Ledger-only credit-book apps record who owes what, yet not stock, purchases or a full double-entry ledger.

Separate accounting packages keep strong books, but sales from the counter are exported or re-keyed. In Skyline Nexus ERP, once Auto-post Sales Transactions is switched on, every final POS sale posts a balanced journal for sales, output tax, cost of goods and inventory, and purchases, payments and expenses post the same way. The trial balance, P&L and balance sheet can then be filtered by branch or viewed for the whole group.

India tax integration

Taxes and compliance in India

Tamil Nadu has GST State code 33: every GSTIN registered in Tamil Nadu starts with 33. Sales inside Tamil Nadu carry CGST + SGST; sales to another State carry IGST. A branch in another State needs its own GSTIN and the right place of supply on each invoice: in Skyline Nexus ERP you choose the intra-State or inter-State tax group on the sale.

Built in today

  • GST rates in force since 22 September 2025 (5%, 18%, 40%; 0.25%, 1.5% and 3% for stones and jewellery) and older rates for past periods; a cess as an extra component of a tax group.

  • Tax groups combining CGST + SGST (or UTGST) into one rate, plus IGST rates, set per product and chosen per sale.

  • Prices entered tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive per product; the POS works out the tax either way.

  • Your GSTIN as the business tax number and the customer's GSTIN on the contact record, both printed on invoices.

  • An HSN column on invoices from the product category code, an editable invoice heading (for example "Tax Invoice" or "Bill of Supply") and a receipt design that prints each tax component in its own column.

  • Credit notes for sales returns, debit notes for sales and purchases, and purchase returns.

  • With auto-posting on, every final sale, return, purchase and expense posts output or input tax to its own ledger account, matching the tax report.

  • Branches with their own invoice numbering and invoice layout; a branch's own GSTIN can be printed on its invoices from a location field.

Ready for your accountant

  • Tax report: input tax on purchases, output tax on sales and tax on expenses for any period, branch or contact.

  • Trial balance, general ledger and day book with the input and output tax accounts, exported to Excel or PDF.

  • Audit Pack: one Excel workbook with trial balance, balance sheet, P&L, journals, sales, purchases and a ledger tax summary.

  • Sales and purchase lists your chartered accountant can use to prepare GST returns. Skyline Nexus ERP does not file returns itself.

Coming or on request (not live today)

  • Automatic CGST + SGST or IGST from the place of supply.

  • HSN and SAC codes per item with validation, and separate B2B, B2C and export invoice types.

  • GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B style summaries and input tax credit matching: ask us.

  • E-invoicing through the Invoice Registration Portal (IRN and signed QR): the India connector is built but not live. Ask us for your go-live date.

  • E-way bills and direct filing on the GST portal.

  • Reverse-charge marking for India, TDS and TCS.

  • Indian payroll items (PF, ESI, professional tax) are not offered: payroll in Skyline Nexus ERP is built for Saudi Arabia.

GST for a Tamil Nadu business

Every GSTIN issued in Tamil Nadu begins with State code 33. A sale inside the State carries CGST plus SGST, each at half the rate, while a sale to Karnataka, Kerala or any other State carries IGST at the full rate. Registration is due above INR 20 lakh aggregate turnover in a financial year, and a supplier of goods only may use the INR 40 lakh threshold, except for ice cream, pan masala and tobacco.

In Skyline Nexus ERP you set up GST rates as tax groups, for example CGST 9% plus SGST 9% or IGST 18%, and choose the intra-State or inter-State group yourself, and an HSN column can be printed from the category code. Suppliers above INR 5 crore aggregate turnover must obtain an IRN for B2B invoices, which Skyline Nexus cannot do yet, and e-way bills, GSTR returns and automatic place-of-supply switching are not live either; India onboarding runs by waitlist.

Getting started from Tamil Nadu

India onboarding for Skyline Nexus ERP currently works through the India waitlist on this page and a demo; the buttons read Join the waitlist, Book a demo and Ask on WhatsApp. A multi-city Tamil Nadu business should list each branch first, then prepare products and opening stock per location as a CSV file, contacts with GSTIN and opening balances, and its chart of accounts.

Skyline Nexus is set up with a financial year starting in April, INR as currency, dd-mm-yyyy dates and invoice amounts in words in the Indian system of lakh and crore. Support is by WhatsApp, phone and e-mail; there is no office in India, so Tamil Nadu customers are helped remotely during onboarding and afterwards.

  1. List every Tamil Nadu branch, depot and counter that should become a business location.
  2. Export products with category codes for the HSN column and opening stock per location to CSV.
  3. Collect customer and supplier GSTINs starting with 33 or other State codes, with opening balances.
  4. Book a demo to set up CGST plus SGST and IGST tax groups before the first sale.

Questions from Tamil Nadu businesses

What does State code 33 mean for a Tamil Nadu business?

State code 33 is the first two digits of every GSTIN registered in Tamil Nadu. A business with branches in Tamil Nadu and in another State needs a separate GSTIN in each, and Skyline Nexus ERP can keep each branch as its own location with its own invoice numbering, so bills from the Tamil Nadu branch carry the right registration.

When must a Tamil Nadu trader register for GST?

A Tamil Nadu supplier must register above INR 20 lakh aggregate turnover in a financial year, and a supplier of goods only may use the INR 40 lakh threshold, except for ice cream, pan masala and tobacco. Some suppliers must register regardless of turnover. Skyline Nexus ERP records the GSTIN on contacts but does not decide registration for you.

Can Skyline Nexus ERP run a Tamil Nadu auto-component workshop?

Skyline Nexus ERP includes manufacturing with work orders, bills of materials and routings, and raw materials are consumed from stock valued by FIFO or LIFO. A Tamil Nadu auto-component workshop can follow each work order to finished goods, invoice the customer and see cost of goods posted, with cost centres to compare lines or plants.

Does Skyline Nexus ERP handle textile stock moving between Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Chennai?

Skyline Nexus ERP keeps stock per business location and records transfers between them, with location-wise stock reports. A textile firm moving yarn or garments between Coimbatore, Tiruppur and Chennai sees what sits where. Stock transfers do not post to the general ledger, so the books change only when goods are bought or sold.

How is Skyline Nexus ERP different from a billing app for a Tamil Nadu shop?

Many billing apps print GST bills and keep stock counts, while the accounts are often kept in a separate package. Skyline Nexus ERP, once Auto-post Sales Transactions is switched on, posts each final sale as a balanced journal, so a Tamil Nadu shop's trial balance and balance sheet stay current. Some other providers already offer IRN e-invoicing, which Skyline Nexus does not offer yet.

Is Skyline Nexus ERP available in Hindi or Tamil, and does it use rupees?

Skyline Nexus ERP runs in English, with a Hindi interface translation available among many other languages; a Tamil interface is not claimed here. Amounts are kept in INR, dates can be shown as dd-mm-yyyy, and invoice amounts in words can follow the Indian system of lakh and crore.

How does a Tamil Nadu company start with Skyline Nexus ERP?

A Tamil Nadu company joins the India waitlist on this page or books a demo, because onboarding in India is by invitation for now. The team then helps import products, opening stock, contacts with GSTIN and opening balances, and the chart of accounts from CSV files, with the financial year set to start in April.
